Bacton Sandscaping Monitoring

Project description

SHORE surveyed the North Norfolk Coastline from Mundesley to Walcott, just after construction of the beach nourishment designed by Royal HaskoningDHV to keep this coasts and its assets safe.

The Bacton to Walcott Sandscaping Scheme was designed by Royal HaskoningDHV and executed by Team Van Oord in summer 2019. Severe coastal erosion threatened villages and key infrastructure such as the Bacton Gas Terminal. Royal HaskoningDHV sought the expertise of SHORE’s monitoring capacities (showcased at the much larger nature based solution in Holland: the Sandmotor). 

RHDHV and SHORE teamed up to start an innovative monitoring method in which integral morphological measurements of the coast and numeric modelling are combined to increase coastal zone management and coastal safety. is financing this Dutch innovation, which is projected to impact worldwide coastal zone management in a positive way.

SHORE used its mobile LiDAR system to scan the beach, cliffs and coastal structures in 3D, with very high resolution. The foreshore and surfzone were surveyed with SHORE’s jet ski survey system. Both data sources are combined into tailored input for RHDHV’s digital twin, as well as input for the North Norfolk District Council’s and Environmental Agencies coastal monitoring practices.
