South-Holland Coast
Project description
The waterboard Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier collaborates with the drinking water company PWN to reinforce the dunes and vegetation at Kieftenvlak near Heemskerk in the Netherlands. Hereto, multiple gaps are made in the dunes to stimulate sand movement from the beach to dunes and the infiltration area further away from the beach.
From 2016 onwards Shore performs regular photogrammetry surveys to monitor the sand movement from beach to the dunes and the depth of the man-made gaps in the dunes. With the aim of the intervention in mind, Shore moreover analyses the effectiveness and impact on the evaluated area.
The Kieftenvlak area is relatively covered by vegetation, which limits the applicability of photogrammetry for the evaluation of morphological developments. Therefore, this project was one of the incentives for Shore to pursue the LiDAR technology. Moreover, during the pilot phase of the LiDAR system, the Kieftenvlak has been one of the test areas to obtain insight in the applicability of LiDAR in dune sections with (dense) vegetation.
